There are still some meters to the ground left, as you can see on other images  To the right you can see a part of the "Liebfrauenkirche" ("Church of our Dear Lady").

General Information: The "Trierer Dom" ("Cathedral of Trier"), also called "Dom St. Peter" ("Cathedral of Saint Peter"), is the oldest cathedral in Germany. A good aerial shot can be seen on Bing Maps [link] . The cathedral measures 113 meters times 41 meters and possesses a height of 76 meters. Its history goes back to the 4th century under Emperor Constantine, like that of many sights in Trier. The original building was even four times as big, but the Cathedral suffered numerous destructions and reconstructions over the centuries.
A large, 4 meters long fragment of one of the original four granite pillars from the 4th century are laid down in front of the main portal. It is known as "Domstein" ("Stone of the Cathedral") and was originally part of an enormous pillar that was almost 12 meters high with a weight of 65 tons.
The Cathedral contains a cloth called "Heiliger Rock" ("Holy Tunic") since the 12th century. Believers worship it as the seamless robe Jesus wore at his crucifixion, mentioned in the Bible in John 19:23-24 [link] . It was last exhibited in 1996 and attracted hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. The next exhibition will take place in 2012, which will also be the 500-year-anniversary of its first exhibition in 1512.

The "Liebfrauenkirche" ("Church of Our Dear Lady") is the oldest Gothic church in Germany. Its predecessor from the 4th century had deteriorated over the centuries, so around 1230 the construction of the new church began at its place and ended thirty years later. It features several remarkable architectural and sculptural elements, of which the most distinctive one may be the fact that it is shaped like a rose. It is not that visible from the outside (aerial shot: [link] ), but the interior view [link] and especially the floor plan [link] show it very clearly. The church suffered heavy damage during World War II which is why many elements like the altar or the colorful window panes are of modern origin nowadays.

Trier is a city in the Federal Republic of Germany with a population of 100,000. It is located in the Western part of Germany only 15 km from the border of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and lies on the banks of the Moselle River. It claims to be the oldest recognized city in Germany, being founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. Besides its numerous buildings from the Roman and the frequency of archaeological discoveries, it is very famous as a wine-growing region.
