Another view from under the Porta Nigra, facing the city. We are looking down the Simeonstraße and can see the St. Gangolf church at the "Hauptmarkt" ("Main Market") about 150 meters away.

General Information: The most famous (and usually the only) building Trier is known for is the Porta Nigra, which translates from Latin to "Black Gate". Ironically, the Romans who built it about 200 AD surely did not call it so because the sandstone was still gray then; weathering darkened it over the centuries. The Porta Nigra (or just Porta, how the people of Trier call it) would not stand anymore if it had not been transformed into a church in the Middle Ages; one can still see where stones and metal were broken out of the building before that. In 1804, Napoleon ordered to convert the Porta back to the original Roman form, which is how it still looks today.

An aerial shot can be seen on Bing Maps [link] (click "Turn left" once). A good photograph of the southern side is available here: [link]

Trier is a city in the Federal Republic of Germany with a population of 100,000. It is located in the Western part of Germany only 15 km from the border of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and lies on the banks of the Moselle River. It claims to be the oldest recognized city in Germany, being founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. Besides its numerous buildings from the Roman and the frequency of archaeological discoveries, it is very famous as a wine-growing region.
